The Laryngeal theory, which originated from the hypotheses put forward by Saussure at the end of the 19th century, largely influenced the approach to the Indoeuropean protolanguage in the first half of the 20th century, whereas in the latter half of the 20th century it became the dominant paradigm in Indoeuropean studies. In his book Wojciech Smoczyński presents an overview of the Laryngeal theory and demonstrates its potential application for historical studies of the Lithuanian language.
